Right opposite Chester railway station, The Queen at Chester has been welcoming travellers since 1860. Whether you have friends or family coming to stay, or fancy a night off in your own city, it makes a handsome base just a short walk from the Rows.

A landmark on City Road

Most of us know The Queen from the outside: the grand Victorian frontage that greets everyone arriving by train. It opened in 1860 as a railway hotel, and it still has that sense of occasion as you walk up the steps. Being directly opposite the station makes it the obvious choice for visitors coming by rail, and it is easy to reach by car too.

The rooms

Our sister title Travel Life stayed recently. Booked into a standard double, they were upgraded on arrival to a superior room on the second floor: generous and well appointed, with a very comfortable bed, a large flat screen TV, a mini fridge and a sleek shower room. Their room looked out over the hotel’s Palazzo style gardens, a quiet contrast to the buzz downstairs.

Bar, restaurant and breakfast

The bar and restaurant are beautifully styled, and the hotel was lively on a Saturday night. With the city centre only around five minutes’ walk away, though, it is just as easy to head out to Chester’s restaurants and bars and come back to a quiet room. Breakfast is everything you would expect from a four star hotel, with plenty of hot and cold choices, pastries, breads and juices.

Who it suits

The Queen is a good recommendation for visiting relatives and friends who want to be close to the station and the centre, for wedding guests, and for anyone who fancies a staycation in their own city. Travel Life found it real value for money, with good offers online, so it pays to compare prices before you book.

Chester Life Tip!
The hotel is a short walk from the Eastgate Clock, so it makes a perfect starting point for a walk round the city walls.
